In the Korean market, the popularity of French wines, a traditional wine producing country, is declining. Chilean wine, which saw a surge in sales since the Korea-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA), has slowed. On the other hand, the popularity of Italian and Spanish wines, which are not well known among domestic wine lovers, is skyrocketing.
Wine imports from France last year fell 5 percent from last year, according to wine statistics from Wine Country, a leading alcohol importer and distributor, on nine major wine imports from 2002 to 2005. The number of high-end wines is still the number one importing country in the country, but the popularity of Italian and Spanish wines is rising, and the market share of French wines is declining.
Italian wines grew 12% in 2004 and 43% in 2005. Spanish wines also grew rapidly with the introduction of fine wines, growing at a rate of 51 percent last year, compared to 10 percent in 2004.
